Eddie “The Eagle” Butler pitched great but the offense could not help complete the sweep.

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Eddie Butler worked into the fifth inning giving up 5 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks and 4 strikeouts before being pulled in favor of Justin Grimm after the San Diego Padres pitcher Craig Stammen led off with a double and scored on Jose Pirela’s single to center field to make the game 2-1. Grimm was able to come in and hold the lead. Cubs relief pitcher Brian Duensing gave up a home run to Padres short stop Erick Aybar in the sixth and then in the eighth innning Chicago Cubs reliever Koji Uehara walked in the go-ahead run. Uehara was issued the loss.

The Chicago Cubs could only muster 2 hits in todays 3-2 loss ending the 3 game winning streak. The lone hits were a 2 run home run by Ian Happ who now has 10 homers 19 RBI in 112 at bats. Kris Byant had the other hit going 1-4 today batting .260 with a .902 OPS. Anthony “The Cornerstone” Rizzo 14 game hitting streak came to end today also as he went 0-4 at the plate. Next up for the 36-35 defending champs is a 4 games series against the Marlins in Miami. The Cubs will start Jake Arrieta (6-5 4.64 ERA) versus Jeff Locke (0-2 4.58 ERA) game time 6:10 Central time.
