Welcome Bat! The Cubs offense explodes.

The Cubs got a much needed break to get away from the game and recharge themselves for the remainder of the season. They start the second half tonight 5.5 games behind the NL Central leading Brewers. The Cubs will have a chance to start to narrow that gap today against Baltimore for an Interleague series vs. the Orioles. The Cubs bats got offensive right out of the gate. Ben Zobrist hitting in the lead off spot tonight led off with a double and Anthony Rizzo reached base in his first at bat. Catcher Willson Contreras drove them both in with a a 3 run blast. And before the Cubsessed Cubs fans in attendance could sit down Kyle Schwarber hit a solo shot to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Cubs where able to continue to tack on two additional runs in the second inning when Zobrist hit a two run homer with Addison Russell on second base. The Boys in Blue did not stop there. Chicago Cub right fielder Jason Heyward launched a two out two run shot of his own in the third inning to make it a 8-0 ball game.

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Mike Montgomery cruised through the first two innings. Coming into the third inning with an eight run lead gave up a solo shot to former Cub Wellington Castillo to make it 8-1. Montgomery gave up another reunion the fourth inning to make it 8-2. Montgomery looked like he was still in command to start the bottom of the fifth by striking out the Orioles lead off hitter Adam Jones. The Cubs starter then gave up two hits, one a ground rule double that left runners on second and third which led to him being pulled for Cubs reliever Justin Grimm. The Orioles did not let up drilled Grimm for four runs to make it 8-6.

The Cubs were able to hold the two run lead until Cubs reliever Koji Uehara gave up the game tying two run home run in the bottom of the eighth. According to ESPN Stats and Information teams are 1-185 when trailing by 8 at any point in a game this season. The Chicago Cubs did not want to allow the Orioles to make this list. Addison Russell came up in the ninth and launched a solo shot to make it 9-8. Cubs closer Wade Davis came in and shut the door on Baltimore to get the much needed W.
