Starting pitcher John Lackey gave up 4 runs in 4 innings off of 6 hits taking the loss finishing the game with a 5.26 ERA for the year. Lackey has given up 19 home runs in 75 innings this season. “Kind of battled through it. Left a couple pitches over the plate. Need to pitch better. “I definitely didn’t feel great today,” Lackey said afterward. “You definitely have better starts than others,” he said. “Stuff wasn’t great today. Left some balls over the plate, and I paid for it.” Prior to todays game Maddon mentioned Lackey may try some new things to get out of the early inning funk.
Maddon mentioned Lackey changing his approach in NY: “Joe doesn’t have much to do with the pitching. I don’t know what he’s talking about.”

Cubs relievers were unable to provide any relief. Brian Duesning and Felix Pena each gave up a run in 3 innings of relief combined.
#Cubs Maddon: We can't keep using that as an excuse that the other team's pitcher is good. We've got to start beating better pitchers"

The offense was just as stagnant providing 5 hits and single homer run from Addison Russell the top of the 7th to make it 4-1. That is Russells’ 5th home runoff the season. Jacob deGrom gave up 5 hits including the solo home run and pitched a complete game earning himself and the Mets the win.
First #Mets complete game at Citi Field since Jon Niese in August 2013.
